Intangible but Visible

From conception to about 18 weeks, the only maternal signs of pregnancy are non-specific signs such as morning sickness, frequency of urination and increase in abdominal girth. There may be other sings such as darkening of the areola, sriae gravidarums and lineanigra. At this moment the mother has no clue as to what kind of baby she is carrying. With 3D ultrasound one can clearly see the embryonic development in its early development.

10 WEEKS

Human feature are starting to show as early as 11weeks and the mother is able to identify the head and limbs on a surface mode. The ever-pulsating heart is an immense reassuring source of joy for both parents and the attending Gynaecologist. The placental mass con be clearly visualized and position grading may be done from this moment.

11 WEEKS

By 13 weeks, limb movements are evident ad well-formed fingers can be identified. The baby is seen swimming like a tadpole in a pool of amniotic fluid.

Various body parts need to be focused and visualized to exclude anomalies and start claiming resemblance’s. Below one sees an ear which the father claims it looks like his while the mother claims that the baby’s nose is like hers. These are all positive sighs of bonding with an unborn baby and let the couple go through pregnancy in unison. I always encourage couples to attend antenatal care and classes together.

EAR

The female sex organs shown below is always a sign of self identity to mothers and she will start imagining buying ear-rings to her baby and braiding the hair or even taking her to a saloon for singles

MALE

While the father after seeing the male as in a picture below will start imaging himself working in the yard or washing the car with the son . the couple start naming the child and buying the right color of clothes for the baby “blue for boys and pink for girls”. Both parents like the picture below easily appreciate boys.

MALE

THE MOST EXCITING ARE THE FACIAL FEATURES CLEARLY SHOWS RESEMBLANCE’S TO PARENTS. THERE IS ALWAYS A TUG OF ARGUMENT, EACH PARENT CLAIMING THAT THE BABY LOOKS LIKE THE OTHER.
