Principles of 3D Ultrasonography

There are three methods used to obtain images in 3D.

  • Computer processing.
  • Defocusing lens.
  • Real Time ultrasonic beam tracing.

types of volume visualization can be performed in these methods i.e. section reconstructuring, surface rendering and volume rendering. In volume visualization the viewing direction can be selected arbitrarily and volume measurements can be done.

The apparatus used are convex 3D probe and an defocusing lens which produces a topographic pictures with thick slices. The apposition of several slices produces a volume box.

The scanning direction and volume of interest is selected by the scanner according to his/her preferences and experience.
